No Words, #1 (New Project)

Well, a few words at first. Quite a few years ago, I helped start and participated in a no words forum where a photo would be posted and that image would convey or set a theme. Then others would post their photos interpreting that theme. No description, comments, or text allowed, only images. I really enjoyed the variety—images sometimes only tied to the theme by the most tenuous thread, other times with a resounding thematic link. It was always interesting to see what people considered the ‘theme’ and some of the interpretations would be quite intelligent.

So, I’ve decided to do this as an exercise. I’m doing it mainly as an exercise to shoot more, but also to post images that don’t fit in a gallery or collection. In other words, the random things I find that I like to photograph. Please hit Recommend or Share below if you like the image. Enjoy!

Mickey Mouse Culture In Bangkok

I’ve had a project about American consumer culture creeping around in my gray matter for some time. I don’t recall how it happened, I’m guessing I was doing something mindless… and I got the damn theme song from The Mickey Mouse Club stuck in my head. I immediately started bastardizing it (a strange habit I have with song lyrics) until it turned into M-I-SEE!, K-E-WHY?, M-O-USA! Neither had I seen an image that established the look of the project, nor had I expected to find it in Bangkok…

Bangkok Personalities — Tom

Goddamnmotherfuckingsonofabitch—fuck-me-that-hurts. That’s my response. Under duress. I’m responding to Tom, whom I’ve met on the long end of three minutes earlier. I’m in Lumpini Park, Bangkok, getting in a morning bodyweight workout. He’s there… well, to kick my ass, Thai massage style.

New Project: Bangkok Personalities

bangkok personalities intro

I’ve been meeting some interesting people here in Thailand and have decided to do a Bangkok Personalities project: describe people that I happen to meet that strike me as interesting, and shoot a portrait or two of them. The first will be posted soon, take a look!

The image above? Not a person, but something I ate that was really good: Daikon radish pickled with soy sauce (among other things). Yum!

Plain Of Jars, Here I come…

Plain Of Jars

For the last several years, I’ve wanted to visit SE Asia. I’ve already been to Japan, and absolutely loved that. However, things just fell right into place and I’m headed off to Bangkok. That will be my ‘homebase’ as I travel to other locations. One of those locations is the Plain of Jars in Laos, read a bit here. See some pix here. So, I’m packing up my still camera, panoramic equipment, a camcorder, and what seems to be way too much audio equipment.

More on this in the next few months. I’ve purchased a one-way ticket, so I’m not sure when I’ll be back…

New Project: All Horses Are The Same Color

White Horse

I’ve been working on a small project with a horse. It’s a series of high-key images–typically not my forte. I’m usually one with much more shadow in my images than highlights. I’ve been using several Canon lenses on this project:

  • EF 50mm/1.2 Prime
  • EF 24mm T/S II L Tilt Shift Lens
  • EF 45mm T/S Tilt Shift Lens
  • EF 90mm T/S Tilt Shift Lens

One of the biggest difficulties is getting a shot in focus with a lens at f1.2, or with the optics tilted to get a narrow band of focus… horses don’t like to hold still! And, there is always the issue of being safe when being so close to such a large animal (he’s a Percheron mix, 16.3 hands tall and weighs about 1700 lbs.). Fortunately, this horse is quite mellow. He isn’t fazed in the least by a camera shutter being fired near his face, and is very curious. Still, it’s a bit of a challenge, but I really enjoy being around him.
