Alex Timmermans

“Flight Instruction” Copyright Alex Timmermans

My photographic interests are fairly broad, from modern digital all the way back to the antique or alternative processes. That’s why I was very happy to see this short video Escape To Nature about Alex Timmermans and his wet plate collodion photography. It was shot by Patrice Lesueur, and is beautiful in its own right. Take a look… Read More»

The Stunning Work Of Michael Massaia

I’ve discovered a photographer whose work I really love: Michael Massaia. He creates stunning black and white images of desolation and emptiness, but not in a way that leaves one depressed, but more in a way that leaves one fascinated. To top it off, Massaia uses large format film cameras and creates his look in the darkroom. He is an incredibly skilled printer.

Take a look at his portfolios here. Watch a video about him and his process here.

American Tintype

I’ve been an ardent fan of the ‘alternative processes’ in photography for the last decade or so. I’ve taken classes in gum bichromate and cyanotype, but other than the attending classes, collecting a few antique optics, and acquiring a truly large collection of books on the various processes, I haven’t gone any deeper. Ian Ruhter: Silver & Light

This is an amazing video–the wet plate collodion process is difficult with small plates (the process uses hand made and mixed photosensitive chemicals poured directly onto a glass plate then immediately put in the camera and exposed), but at this size, it is almost unbelievable.

I really admire this guy and his efforts:

I think I’m going to break out all those antique Petzval lenses and start playing with them again…
